STATESBORO, Ga. - Jermaine Austin scored on a 4-yard run with 1:02 remaining to give Georgia Southern a 27-24 Southern Conference victory over No. 1 Furman Saturday.

The victory kept the No. 14 Eagles (7-3, 5-2) alive in their drive for a spot in the I-AA playoff field. Furman dropped to 7-2 overall, 5-2 in conference play.

Austin's score capped a 52 yard drive in which the Eagles had to overcome a 15-yard holding call on a 33-yard touchdown run by quarterback Jayson Foster.

The Paladins trailed 14-10 at the half, but came back to lead 17-14 and again at 24-20 only to see Georgia Southern rally to win.

Southern drove 87 yards on 17 plays for the winning touchdown, and appeared to have the go-ahead score with 1:45 to play when Foster sprinted 33 yards to score. However, Georgia Southern was called for holding and that moved the ball back to the Furman 43.

Foster, known more for his running than his passing, was facing third-and-17 when he unleashed a dying quail of a pass that wide receiver Chris Dickerson pulled in at the eight yard line.

After Foster gained four yards Austin bulled his way into the end zone. Foster ran for a career high 191 yards including a 26-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. Austin added 142 yards and three touchdowns as Georgia Southern ran for 430 yards on a Furman defense that was allowing only 126 yards per game.

The game was not clinched until 29 seconds remained when Terence McBride intercepted Ingle Martin at the Eagle nine yard line.

Martin wound up completing 16 of 21 passes for 240 yards and one touchdown. It was his 39 yard scoring pass to Justin Stepp three minutes into the third period that gave the Paladins a 17-14 lead.
