Coon scores twice as Lafayette ends Holy Cross title hopes
WORCESTER, Mass. - Tyrell Coon scored on a blocked punt return and on a 4-yard rush as Lafayette pulled away in the second half for a 31-21 win over Holy Cross on Saturday.
Tyrell Coon, who ran for 96 yards, scored on a 4-yard run at 8:58 of the third quarter to break a 14-14 halftime tie and give the Leopards (6-4, 3-2 Patriot League) the lead for good.
Rob Curley threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Michael Conte later in the third to make it 28-14, and Davis Rodriguez kicked a 41-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach.
Curley finished 18-of-31 for 185 yards.
Dominic Randolph threw a 14-yard scoring pass to Ryan Maher and ran 3 yards for a touchdown in the first half for Holy Cross (6-4, 3-2). He finished 26-of-47 for 247 yards and two interceptions.
The Crusaders dropped their second straight game and lost a chance of gaining a share of the league title.
Tyrell Coon scored on a 2-yard run in the second quarter after Marcel Quarterman blocked a punt.
Lafayette's defense held down the league's best offense. Holy Cross averaged 495 yards per game coming in, but had just 255 yards against the Leopards. Nigel Bryant had two interceptions.
