Grambling State head coach Rod Broadway notched his 50th career win on Thursday evening as the Tigers scored three defensive touchdowns in a 33-7 victory over Texas Southern at Delmar Stadium.
Texas Southern took an early 7-0 margin after recovering a muffed punt in the end zone with 4:44 left in the first half. TSU tried a bit of trickery late in the first quarter with a halfback pass but cornerback Kenneth Anio snuffed the play out and picked off Lucas Caparelli?fs attempt to close out the quarter. Despite the turnover, it appeared GSU?fs offensive drive would stall but punter Dezmond Spivey rushed for 35 yards on 4th-and-19 to breathe new life into the offense. Six plays later, Grambling found the endzone as Greg Dillon ran in 9 yards. However, the PAT fell short as TSU managed to maintain a 7-6 lead early in the second quarter.
It appeared Grambling would head into the half down by a point until a late defensive play turned the tide of the game. With 22 seconds left, defensive back Jeffery Jack stripped TSU?fs Marcus Wright of the ball and sophomore linebacker Charles Gamble scooped it up and raced 50 yards for the score. Luis Leal?fs PAT was good as Grambling claimed a 13-7 advantage entering the half.
Grambling kept the momentum up as the second half opened with a 13-play, 64-yard scoring drive that was capped off by Dillon?fs 18-yard touchdown pass to Kiare Thompson. From that point, the Grambling defense took over and added two touchdowns of its own as Christian Anthony picked off a pass for a 12-yard jaunt followed by Avery Stovall?fs 3-yard score off a botched TSU punt.
For the game, Grambling rolled up 498 total yards (351 R, 147 P) to Texas Southern?fs 101 (63 P, 38 R). The GSU backfield had its best performance of the year as the tandem of Frank Warren, Dillon and Cornelius Walker rushed for 113, 97 and 94 yards respectively. Nick Lewis caught four passes for 57 yards while Dillon tossed two touchdowns and passed for 110 yards on 10-of-23 passing. On defense, Keefe Hall finished with nine tackles while Jack had eight tackles, an interception and two forced fumbles.
Grambling closes out the 2008 regular season against Southern next weekend in the 35th edition of the annual State Farm Bayou Classic in the Louisiana Superdome at 1 p.m. in New Orleans, La. The game will be televised live on NBC-TV.
If the Tigers defeat Southern, they?fll clinch their second consecutive SWAC West crown and a berth to the SWAC Championship Game on Dec. 13 in Birmingham, Ala. A loss to Southern would force a three-way tie for the SWAC West crown and trigger a three-way coin flip for the berth between Grambling, Southern and Prairie View as all teams would have identical 6-1 conference marks.
