HONOLULU - Greg Alexander passed for a career-best three touchdowns and ran for another score as Hawaii routed Idaho 49-17 on Saturday night.
Daniel Libre rushed for two scores in the second half and Malcolm Lane had four catches for 144 yards and two touchdowns for the Warriors (6-5, 5-3 Western Athletic Conference), who moved within a victory of securing a berth to the Hawaii Bowl and broke .500 mark for the first time this season.
The Warriors controlled the game with their quick-strike offense and swarming defense that recorded seven sacks and four turnovers, including three interceptions.
Greg Alexander was 14-of-24 for 264 yards before giving way to the backups after playing one series in the fourth quarter. His 1-yard TD plunge tied the game 7-7 and his three scoring passes were highlighted by an 82-yarder to Lane.
Lane blew past a defender and hauled in a long touchdown pass in the first quarter to put Hawaii up 14-7. It was the longest play of the season and eighth longest pass in school history.
He also caught a 36-yard TD pass to give Hawaii a 35-10 lead to open the second half. After the grab, Lane made a slashing motion to his throat, which raised the ire of his coach and quickly drew a 15-yard flag.
The Warriors improved to 9-1 against the Vandals (2-10, 1-6), and Saturday's defeat ended their season. It was their ninth straight losing year.
The loss was also the 14th straight on the road for the Vandals, who came out firing and easily scored on their opening series but lost steam throughout the game.
A 6-yard TD hookup between Nathan Enderle and Peter Bjorvik gave Idaho a 7-0 lead. Enderle was 6-of-7 for 58 yards on the 13-play, 74-yard drive.
The Vandals wouldn't see the end zone again until the fourth quarter when Enderle threw a 3-yard TD pass to Eric Greenwood. Enderle was 19-of-31 for 164 yards and was pressured all night.
Jameel Dowling intercepted an errant pass by Enderle and returned it 29 yards to the Idaho 2, setting up Pilares' short TD run that made it 21-7.
Tino Amancio booted a 52-yard field goal to cut Hawaii's lead to 11, but Idaho couldn't get any closer.
