WEST POINT, N.Y. - Two games into Stan Brock's second season as Army coach, he sounded completely exasperated with his team.

John Clements returned a kickoff 87 yards for a touchdown and Hugo Souza ran 22 yards with a fumble for another score as New Hampshire topped Army 28-10 on Saturday.

"I'm embarrassed," Brock said. "I'm ashamed - not that we lost to the University of New Hampshire, because they are a good football team, but by the way we did it. I thought that in the first half we had some things going. In the second half, when things started going bad, I think there's some guys (who) quit. ... I'm ashamed. I apologize to the United States Military, Corps of Cadets, anybody really who watched that game. That's not the way that these kids need to play this game."

Senior linebacker John Plumstead said, "I think we're all pretty devastated."

Army quarterback Carson Williams was injured early in the second quarter and did not return. He injured his left (non-throwing) hand when it was apparently stepped on.

Brock said Williams' condition would not be known until the quarterback had X-rays taken.

Williams was 7-for-7 for 95 yards and a TD before the injury. Army did not complete a pass in four attempts after Williams came out.

"I thought he was playing well," Brock said. "He was making the proper reads, and the ability to throw the ball was something that we were hoping we could do."

For the second consecutive week, turnovers and a big kickoff return hurt the Black Knights, who lost their opener to Temple 35-7.

R.J. Toman was 11-of-16 for 131 yards with one interception for New Hampshire, a Football Championship Subdivision team which has beaten its last four opponents from the former Division I-A. Chad Kackert ran for 65 yards and one touchdown on 10 carries for the Wildcats.

"We have some talented kids in this program that were overlooked in the recruiting process because they were not big enough or not fast enough," New Hampshire coach Sean McDonnell said. "They can play football though, and they showed it today."

Collin Mooney led Army with 57 yards on 16 carries. It was the eighth consecutive loss for the Black Knights and the first to a FCS team since a 30-21 loss to Holy Cross in 2002.

Momentum swung New Hampshire's way early in the second quarter when the Wildcats took a 14-7 lead on Kackert's 23-yard run. The score came after Lance Mailloux recovered Mooney's fumble at the New Hampshire 26.

"We put some drives together, but we just couldn't put it in the end zone," Mooney said. "We couldn't finish it."

Chip Bowden took over for Army after Williams was injured. Bowden went 0-for-3 and ran for 39 yards on 14 carries.

Williams departed after taking sole possession of seventh place on Army's career list with his 16th TD pass, opening the scoring with a 2-yard pass to Mike Evans.

Fo the second consecutive week, Army's special teams allowed a big kickoff return for a touchdown. Three Army defenders converged on Clements near the 35, but he slipped through and ran untouched the rest of the way, tying the game 16 seconds after Army's TD.

Army drew within 14-10 when Matthew Campbell kicked a 42-yard field goal with 20 seconds remaining in the first half.

But New Hampshire scored on a nine-play 66-yard drive to open the second half on Mike Boyle's 5-yard run, and stretched it to 28-10 late in the third quarter when Steve Young forced a fumble by Army's Geoffrey Hewitt; the ball hit the ground and bounced straight up into Souza's hands, who ran it in for the touchdown.

"There's one thing I can't teach: I can't teach heart, I can't teach backbone," Brock said. "There's some of those things that are going to have to be self-taught."
