AKRON, Ohio - Tony Pike connected with Mardy Gilyard on two touchdown passes before leaving the game and Jake Rogers made a go-ahead field goal with 7:45 left in Cincinnati's 17-15 win Saturday over Akron.
Pike broke his left (non-throwing) arm in a victory. He will have surgery Monday and be out three to four weeks. Bearcats quarterback Dustin Grutza broke his leg against Oklahoma and is done for the year.
The Bearcats (3-1) drove 42 yards in nine plays to set up Rogers' 48-yard field goal. Brad Jones intercepted Chris Jacquemain's pass at Akron's 44 with 1:31 remaining to seal the win.
Late in the third, a Gilyard fumble gave Akron (2-3) the ball at the Cincinnati 24, and several plays later, Dennis Kennedy plunged in from the 1. But Jacquemain's attempted run for a 2-point conversion failed, giving the Zips a 15-14 advantage early in the fourth.
Pike was 23 of 34 for 320 yards passing. Gilyard caught seven for 146 yards for Cincinnati.
Akron's Jacquemain connected on 26 of 40 passes for 254 yards, and Deryn Bowser caught 10 for 72 yards.
Akron running back Andrew Johnson was taken off in an ambulance after being injured in the third quarter. The EMT crew came onto the field, as did the player's parents. No additional information was available.
