PASADENA, Calif. -- Freshman Chane Moline scored twice on short runs in the second half and UCLA pulled away for a 31-0 victory over winless Stanford on Saturday night.
Led by cornerbacks Trey Brown and Rodney Van, the Bruins' defense caused five turnovers by the Cardinal. The shutout was UCLA's first since 2004, when it blanked Stanford 21-0.
Sluggish on offense in the rematch at the Rose Bowl, the Bruins scored one touchdown on a blocked punt and another on a fumble recovery.
They led just 7-0 at halftime, but took control with 17 points in the fourth quarter.
UCLA (3-1, 1-1 Pac-10) was coming off a 29-19 loss at Washington. Stanford (0-5, 0-3) is off to its worst start since 1983, when it lost its first six on the way to a 1-10 season.
Things don't get any easier for the Cardinal -- they are at Notre Dame next weekend.
Ben Olson went 20-of-37 for 219 yards for UCLA, but was intercepted twice and didn't throw any scoring passes.
Chane Moline made it 24-0 with a 1-yard scoring run with 5:41 remaining. Chris Horton's interception, the third of the game off Stanford's Trent Edwards, set up the touchdown.
Defensive tackle Kenneth Lombard added another TD just 28 seconds later. Trent Edwards was sacked and fumbled, and Kenneth Lombard picked up the ball and rumbled 5 yards into the end zone.
Trent Edwards, under pressure from the Bruins' pass rush, completed just 12-of-23 for 117 yards.
The Bruins finished with 389 yards of offense while holding the Cardinal to 166.
Chane Moline burst up the middle from 2 yards out to give the Bruins a 14-0 lead late in the third quarter.
Khalil Bell set up the touchdown when he broke loose down the right sideline for a 32-yard gain down to the Cardinal 13. Olson directed the 10-play, 74-yard march.
The Bruins outgained the Cardinal 220 yards to 69 in the first half, but didn't score an offensive touchdown.
The only score in the lackluster half came 4? minutes into the game on a blocked punt.
With Stanford punting on fourth-and-5 from its own 27, the Bruins' Gavin Ketchum broke through and blocked Jay Ottovegio's kick. Linebacker Eric O'Neal grabbed the ball and sprinted 12 yards into the end zone to give UCLA a 7-0 lead.
The Cardinal missed a scoring opportunity in the second quarter when Aaron Zagory was wide right on a 40-yard field goal try.
The Bruins went into the game having converted only 6-of-15 chances in the red zone into touchdowns.
Those woes continuing, the Bruins came up empty late in the second quarter after marching from their own 12-yard line to a first down at the Stanford 6. Chris Markey picked up 4 yards down to the 2, was held to 1 yard on second down, then Olson threw high to tight end William Snead in the end zone on third down. The Bruins went for it on fourth down, but Cardinal cornerback Tim Sims with Richard Sherman dropped Markey for a 2-yard loss.
On their third-quarter scoring drive, Markey was able to pick up 1 yard on third-and-1 from the Stanford 4. Chane Moline scored two plays later.
