Chris Markey leads UCLA to 44-31 victory over Washington

PASADENA, Calif. -- Chris Markey rushed for 193 yards, including a 72-yard touchdown run during a hectic fourth quarter, and UCLA outlasted Washington 44-31 Saturday night.

The Bruins (3-1, 2-0 Pac-10) bounced back from a humbling loss at Utah the previous weekend.

Washington's defense had a poor second half for the second game in a row, with the Bruins pulling away from a 10-10 halftime tie.

UCLA came up with three long scoring plays in the second half - Dennis Keyes' interception return for a 60-yard touchdown late in the third quarter, Chris Markey's long dash, and Matt Slater's 80-yard kickoff return.

The Bruins needed it because Washington's Jake Locker threw for three of his four touchdowns in the fourth quarter. But each time he got the Huskies close, the Bruins responded.

Washington (2-2, 0-1) pulled within seven points twice in the final quarter, but the Bruins quickly opened the lead back to 14.

Locker, a redshirt freshman, rushed for 92 yards and completed 17-of-36 for 216 yards, with two interceptions. His other scoring passes were a 4-yarder to Marcel Reese in the second quarter and an 11-yarder to Corey Williams in the fourth.

Chris Markey carried 14 times for the Bruins, one a 66-yarder to set up a field goal in the first quarter. Kahlil Bell rushed for 109 yards on 27 carries, including an 8-yard touchdown run in the third.

UCLA's other scores came on Kai Forbath's 47-yard field goal in the first quarter, and his kicks of 39 and 30 yards in the fourth; a 2-yard pass from Patrick Cowan to Dominique Johnson in the second quarter, and an 8-yard run by Bell in the third.

Cowan, who was starting in place of the injured Ben Olson, went out of the game with a sprained right knee early in the fourth quarter.

Redshirt freshman McLeod Bethel-Thompson took over, but did not throw any passes.

Cowan went 17-of-30 for 147 yards, with one touchdown and one interception.

UCLA was outscored 37-6 in the second half of its 44-6 loss at previously winless Utah last weekend. The defeat dropped the Bruins from No. 11 out of the national rankings.

Washington had a similar second-half meltdown, leading then-No. 10 Ohio State 7-3 early in the third quarter only to lose 33-14.
