MADISON, Wisconsin - Mike Allen's 34-yard field goal
with 2:05 left in regulation lifted 23rd-ranked Wisconsin past
Fresno State, 23-21, in the John Thompson Foundation Classic.
Allen, who made the team last season as a walk-on, had three
field goals in the contest. His eventual game-winner offset a
miss wide right from 46 yards earlier in the drive. But Fresno
State was called for offsides on the missed kick and the drive
continued.
The Badgers picked up another first down and Allen made good
from 34 yards out as Wisconsin improved to 15-1 in its last 16
non-conference games.
The Badgers were led by sophomore running back Anthony Davis,
who carried a career high-tying 37 times for 184 yards. It was
his seventh straight 100-yard game and 11th in 12 contests.
Wisconsin quarterback Brooks Bollinger, who improved to 23-7 as a
starter, had an effective but unspectacular outing. He
completed 11-of-25 passes for 160 yards but was sacked six
times.
Fresno State caught a bad break when star receiver Bernard
Berrian went down with a sprained right knee at the end of the
first quarter and did not return. Before he left, Bernard Berrian
caught a 22-yard scoring strike from Jeff Grady - who was solid
stepping in for departed star David Carr.
Bernard Berrian had two catches for 54 yards while Grady was 21-of-42
for 262 yards and three touchdowns. Grady, who backed up Carr
for two years, found tight end Alec Greco with a 23-yard
touchdown pass with 9:01 left to give Fresno State a 21-20 edge.
Bernard Berrian's touchdown grab gave the Bulldogs a lead they carried
into the second quarter but freshman fullback Matt Bernstein had
a one-yard touchdown run with just over 14 minutes left in the
half to tie the game.
A field goal by Allen with 4:02 to go in the second quarter gave
Wisconsin a 10-7 lead.
Grady capped the opening drive of the second half by finding
freshman receiver Adam Jennings with an eight-yard scoring toss.
But the Bulldogs could not protect the 14-10 lead as Wisconsin
took the ensuing kickoff and moved 65 yards in 12 plays, capped
by a three-yard touchdown run by Bernstein.
Allen extended Wisconsin's lead to 20-14 with a 35-yard field
goal 3:10 into the final quarter.
Last season, Fresno State posted a 32-20 triumph over Wisconsin.
