IOWA CITY, Iowa (Ticker) -- No. 20 Iowa used several big plays
and matched its best start in 11 years with a 44-16 romp over
Michigan State in a Big Ten Conference contest.
After Michigan State grabbed the lead with a two-yard touchdown
run by Dawan Moss 7:22 into the game, Jermell Lewis returned the
ensuing kickoff 94 yards to tie the score, 7-7.
Nate Keading kicked a 36-yard field goal to give Iowa (6-1, 3-0
Big Ten) a 10-7 edge with 2:36 left in the opening quarter. Just
over two minutes later, safety Derek Pagel intercepted Jeff
Smoker and returned it 62 yards for a 17-7 advantage.
Brad Banks tossed a 62-yard pass to C.J. Jones to push the lead
to 24-7 with 6:32 remaining in the second quarter and Keading
booted a 43-yard field goal 25 seconds before halftime.
Iowa limited Spartans star Charles Rogers to five catches for 78
yards and has won six of its first seven games for the first
time since 1991.
Rogers also was held out of the end zone, stopping his streak of
consecutive games with a touchdown at 14.
Michigan State (3-3, 1-1) had a 21-15 advantage in first downs.
The Hawkeyes added to their lead 3:06 into the third quarter on
a nine-yard run by Fred Russell. Keading made it 37-7 when he
kicked a 28-yard field goal 3:03 later. Banks, who completed
8-of-19 passes for 154 yards, hooked up with Jones again for a
25-yard score to make it 44-7 with 92 seconds left in the third.
Smoker tossed a 20-yard pass to B.J. Lovett with 7:59 left in
the fourth quarter.
Russell rushed 18 times for 75 yards, marking the first
time in 10 games that the Hawkeyes did not have a 100-yard
rusher.
Smoker was 17-of-33 for 169 yards and two interceptions.
