WINSTON-SALEM, North Carolina (Ticker) -- When does basketball season start?
North Carolina suffered its worst loss to Wake Forest in over 50 years, taking a 31-0 beating to remain winless in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
The Tar Heels (2-6, 0-4 ACC) could not stop the ground game of the improved Demon Deacons (5-4, 3-3), who ran for 267 yards and won this showdown of Tobacco Road rivals for the third time in four years.
A traditional basketball power coming off a down season in that sport as well, North Carolina was shut out by Wake Forest for the first time since 1966 and took its worst loss in the series since a 39-7 setback in 1951.
Wake registered its first shutout against any foe since a 35-0 win over Illinois State on September 10, 1988.
Tarence Williams ran for 101 yards on 21 carries and redshirt freshman Clarence Birgs added 56 on 13 rushes for the Demon Deacons. Fullback Ovie Mughelli and freshman Chris Barclay ran for touchdowns four minutes apart in the third quarter.
James MacPherson completed 9-of-15 passes for 177 yards. He threw TD passes of 17 yards to tight end Ray Thomas and 32 yards to Jason Anderson around a 30-yard field goal by Matt Wisnosky in the first half, giving Wake Forest a 17-0 lead.
Anderson's TD catch came one play after a 25-yard punt return by Fabian Davis.
Mughelli had six carries for 26 yards and capped an 80-yard march with a two-yard scoring run that made it 24-0 with 11:36 left in the third quarter. Barclay, who had 45 yards on seven carries, scored from the 9.
The Deacons limited the Tar Heels to 91 rushing yards. C.J. Stephens was 17-of-27 for 221 yards and an interception, taking four sacks.
