AMES, Iowa (Ticker) -- The Heisman Trophy candidacy of Seneca Wallace is gaining some steam.

Seneca Wallace scored on a dazzling 12-yard run and threw a touchdown pass as 14th-ranked Iowa State broke open a close game with a 21-point third quarter and went on a 31-17 Big 12 Conference victory over Texas Tech.

The Cyclones (6-1, 3-0 Big 12 North) are off to their best start since winning their first seven games in 1938.

Split end Lane Danielsen raced 79 yards for a touchdown on a reverse for the Cyclones (6-1, 3-0 Big 12 North), who were idle last week and were playing for the first time since an emotional victory over Nebraska two weeks ago. Iowa State started sluggishly and the game was tied 3-3 at halftime before Seneca Wallace took over.

"We just didn't get things going in the first half," Danielsen said. "We knew we wanted to run the ball because if we did that we knew we could set the tempo."

Seneca Wallace was 15-of-22 for 148 yards and won his shootout battle with the Red Raiders' Kliff Kingsbury, who completed 37-of-50 passes for 272 yards.

Seneca Wallace brought the crowd to its feet in the third quarter when he cut completely across the field, evaded several tacklers and received a crushing block from Michael Wagner before dancing into the end zone and giving the Cyclones a 10-3 lead.

"All I was thinking was score Seneca, score," Iowa State coach Dan McCarney said. "He's something special. He's so calm and cool. He didn't think it was any big deal that he made 11 guys miss twice."

Texas Tech (4-3, 1-1 South) tied the game on a one-yard touchdown run by Cliff Kingsbury with 6:23 left in the quarter, capping a 15-play, 79-yard drive.

Less than a minute later, Danielsen took a handoff on a reverse and raced 79 yards up the left sideline to give the Cyclones the lead for good at 17-10.

"We needed to rise up and get a stop and we didn't do that on a couple of drives in the second half," Texas Tech coach Mike Leach said. "That play was a backbreaker."

Wagner scored on a three-yard run with 1:50 late in the third quarter and Seneca Wallace lofted a 20-yard touchdown to Lance Young in the corner of the end zone with 5:51 left to give the Cyclones a comfortable 31-10 lead.

The only touchdown pass for Cliff Kingsbury was a one-yarder to Carlos Francis with 2:15 left.

The Cyclones have won six straight games after a season-opening loss to Florida State, but maintaining the streak will not be easy. Iowa State is at Oklahoma and Texas the next two weeks.

"It's an amazing challenge," McCarney said. "I think we can go down and play Oklahoma tough and we'll see what happens."

Iowa State set a school record by scoring at least 30 points in seven straight games.

The only scoring of the first half were field goals of 19 yards by Iowa State's Adam Benike and 37 yards by the Red Raiders' Robert Treece.

The Cyclones defeated the Red Raiders for the first time in five all-time meetings.

Taureen Henderson of Texas Tech carried 12 times for 83 yards.
