RUSTON, Louisiana - Joe Smith's dominant performance gave Luke McCown a chance to rest.

Joe Smith ran for a season-high 177 yards and scored two touchdowns as Louisiana Tech rolled to a 53-9 rout over Tulsa in a Western Athletic Conference matchup.

Luke McCown attempted 110 passes as the Bulldogs split their first two games while Joe Smith was limited to only 122 yards on 38 carries. But the senior running back led the offense against the Golden Hurricane, falling just 11 yards shy of his best career performance.

Joe Smith gave Louisiana Tech (2-1, 1-0 WAC) a 10-0 lead with a 33-yard touchdown run less than six minutes into the game and added a 29-yard score seven minutes later.

The Bulldogs scored 24 points in the first quarter and Luke McCown opened the second with an eight-yard TD pass to Chris Norwood for a 31-0 cushion.

Franklin highlighted excellent special teams' play for the Bulldogs, who blocked a punt and an extra point attempt.

Louisiana Tech has won seven consecutive WAC games, the longest current streak in the league.

Tulsa (0-3, 0-1), by contrast, has lost nine straight conference games, the longest current slide in the WAC.

Tyler Gooch completed 16-of-29 passes for 164 yards and threw the Golden Hurricanes' only touchdown to Romby Bryant midway through the second period.

Romby Bryant caught seven passes for 72 yards as Tulsa managed only 225 yards on offense.
