KALAMAZOO, Michigan - Virginia Tech took advantage
of a break in the schedule.
Lee Suggs ran for a touchdown and was on the receiving end of
another score as the fifth-ranked Hokies remained unbeaten with
a 30-0 rout of Western Michigan.
Coming off three straight games against ranked opponents, the
Hokies (5-0) had little trouble with their Mid-American
Conference foe.
Virginia Tech has beaten Western Michigan by a combined 61-0 the
last two seasons.
Suggs, who suffered a torn ACL in the first game last season,
had a 28-yard touchdown reception in the second quarter and ran
five yards for a score in the third, giving the Hokies a 23-0
lead. Suggs' first score was his 40th career TD, tying
William Green and Amos Zereoue's Big East Conference record.
"You never think about things like that when you first start
playing," said Suggs about breaking the record. "It's a once in
a lifetime thing. It is a blessing."
Kevin Jones added a two-yard TD run for Virginia Tech, which
should have another challenging game next week at Big East
Conference opponent Boston College.
Entering the contest with nation's second-ranked rush defense,
the Hokies limited the Broncos to 35 yards on the ground on 27
attempts.
Jonathan Drach passed for 210 yards and lost two fumbles for
Western Michigan (1-3).
"We played hard, but we let things get loose a little," Western
Michigan coach Gary Darnell said. "You give them an inch, and
they take a mile. Our defense did well, and our offense did
some good things. They are just an outstanding team."
After a scoreless opening quarter, the Hokies broke on top 42
seconds into the second on Jon Mollerup's 37-yard field goal.
The field goal was set up when Drach lost a fumble in his own
territory.
The Hokies used a more conventional way to extend the lead with
1:41 left in the half when Bryan Randall shoveled a pass to
Suggs, who ran 28 yards for a score.
It marked the 18th straight game that Suggs has started in which
he has scored a TD.
Randall completed 13-of-19 passes for 194 yards and an
interception.
Just 20 seconds later, the Hokies scored again when Drach had
the ball stripped by Nathaniel Adibi. Alex Markogiannakis
picked up the ball and raced 25 yards for a touchdown, extending
the lead to 16-0.
On their first possession of the third quarter, the Hokies
pushed the lead to 23-0 when Suggs capped an 11-play, 84-yard
drive with a five-yard run. Suggs carried 13 times for 48
yards.
Jones capped the scoring with a two-yard TD run with 11:28
remaining in the fourth.
