WINSTON-SALEM, North Carolina - Woodrow Dantzler is
back on track.
Dantzler accounted for 330 yards and three touchdowns as
25th-ranked Clemson continued its dominance of Wake Forest,
posting a 21-14 Atlantic Coast Conference victory.
One of the nation's most electrifying quarterbacks, Dantzler
managed just 114 total yards last Saturday in an embarrassing
38-3 home loss to conference rival North Carolina.
Dantzler rebounded from the horrendous performance Saturday,
completing 16-of-27 passes for 211 yards and two touchdowns. The
senior also carried 20 times for 119 yards, including a 10-yard
touchdown run on the first play of the fourth quarter that gave
Clemson a 21-7 advantage.
Derrick Hamilton and Ben Hall had touchdown receptions for
Clemson (5-2, 3-2 ACC), which improved to 52-14-1 all-time
against Wake Forest.
Trailing 21-14, the Demon Deacons (3-4, 1-4) tried to rally in
the waning moments of the fourth quarter. But on 3rd-and-8 from
the Clemson 9, James MacPherson was intercepted in the end zone
by safety Charles Hafley.
"We gave ourselves a chance there at the end," Wake Forest coach
Jim Grobe said. "I'm disappointed more for the kids than
anything else."
After a scorless opening quarter, the Demon Deacons broke on top
early in the second period, moving 81 yards in 12 plays. Tarence
Williams capped the march with a three-yard run up the middle
for a touchdown.
Dantzler finally got the Tigers' high-powered offense moving
later in the period.
Dantzler capped a six-play, 53-yard drive with 76 seconds
remaining before intermission with a 32-yard pass down the right
sideline to Hamilton, tying the score at 7-7. Hamilton finished
with six catches for 91 yards.
"It gave us a tremendous lift," said Clemson coach Tommy Bowden
about his team scoring before the half. "Not only because we
scored immediately after they did, but it was right before the
half. I think it motivated our team and deflated them a bit."
On their first possession of the third quarter, the Tigers took
the lead for good, moving 71 yards in 11 plays. Dantzler
culminated the march that took more than six minutes with a
three-yard TD toss to Hall.
Dantzler also provided the Tigers some breathing room 10 seconds
into the fourth quarter with a 10-yard TD run that extended the
lead to 21-7.
The Demon Deacons pulled within seven on Fred Staton's one-yard
touchdown run with 10:59 remaining. Staton had 95 yards on 29
carries.
MacPherson completed 8-of-16 passes for 151 yards and also
committed three turnovers with two interceptions and a fumble.
"We just can't turn the ball over," MacPherson said. "I was
responsible for all three, and if didn't turn the ball over, we
probably would've won the game."
