SEATTLE - Cody Pickett was named after a town in
Wyoming, but he showed no mercy on the Cowboys.
Pickett threw for 404 yards and two touchdowns and ran for a
third as 13th-ranked Washington pulled away for a 38-7 victory
over Wyoming.
The Huskies (2-1) notched their 16th consecutive home victory
and handed the Cowboys (0-4) a school-record 12th straight
defeat.
Washington took a 10-7 lead on a 21-yard field goal by John
Anderson with 9:15 to play in the second quarter. Just over
five minutes later, Rich Alexis scored on a one-yard run to give
the Huskies a 10-point halftime advantage.
"We came out and got it going early," said Pickett, who scored
on a one-yard run 5:02 into the contest. "That was a big thing
for us on offense. We came out and scored on our first drive,
that was our goal."
The Huskies put away the game in the third quarter. Alexis
scored another one-yard touchdown with 10:40 to go and Pickett
hit Paul Arnold for a 10-yard score that made it 31-7 with 4:02
remaining in the period.
An eight-yard pass from Pickett to Patrick Reddick with 12:28 to
play concluded the scoring. An Idaho native who was named by
his rodeo champion father, Pickett completed 34-of-45 passes
without an interception.
"I though he played really, really well," Huskies coach Rick
Neuheisel said. "I thought he played within himself. I don't
think he forced many balls. He's getting better. I took him
aside and told him that in order for us to be a great team, he
has to be a great player."
"I think he played excellent," Washington receiver Reggie
Williams added. "Anytime a quarterback can throw for 400 yards,
it is special. He just hits the open man every day, on every
play."
Pickett's counterpart, Casey Bramlet, was 20-of-31 for 186 yards
with one interception and was sacked six times.
"We have to play better on offense," Cowboys coach Vic Koenning
said. "We've got to cut loose the football. Guys are open and
we're not throwing the ball. That's not what we're supposed to
do."
Alexis ran for 94 yards and had seven receptions for 55, while
Williams caught six passes for 100 yards and Arnold added six
catches for 92.
The Huskies did not punt in the contest.
"I think anytime you don't punt one time in a ballgame, you know
you're going to be excited about the way you move the ball,"
Neuheisel said. "We can be so much better, though, and I'm
eager to go about doing the work that will hopefully make us a
more complete team, a more efficient team."
Wyoming, which was outgained, 549 yards to 255, managed just 86
yards on the ground. Kit Bradshaw led the team with 55 yards
and a TD on seven carries.
"I was recruited on a Wyoming Cowboy football tradition that was
associated with eight-game winning seasons, bowl game
appearances, things like that," offensive lineman Adam Goldberg
said. "If you told me a few years ago we'd be a part of this,
(I'd say) no way. Every team has its trials and tribulations,
and this is ours."
