TULSA, Okla. -- For the sake of his heart, Tulsa coach Steve Kragthorpe would like his team to do what it did against Hawaii a little earlier next time.
The Golden Hurricane (3-2, 1-0 Western Athletic Conference), a team picked to finish last in the WAC, came alive in the second half Saturday to beat Hawaii (2-3, 1-1), the team picked to finish first.
Quarterback James Kilian threw, ran and even had two receptions in Tulsa's 27-16 come-from-behind victory.
"In the second half, we came out and let it rip, and that's what I told them at halftime," Kragthorpe said. "I said, `If we make a mistake I'll take the blame. That's my job. That's why it says head coach on my door. ... Just let it rip.' "
But for his health, he said, "we probably need to do it a little earlier in the game."
Hawaii quarterback Timmy Chang, who had averaged 379.5 yards passing, finished with just 240 yards. And Tulsa repeatedly wormed its way through Hawaii's defense to overcome a 13-point lead and pull ahead for good early in the fourth quarter.
"Tulsa did a good job of halftime adjustment, and we didn't tackle as well as we should have in the second half," Hawaii coach June Jones said. "Offensively, we just couldn't get anything going."
Kilian passed for a season-low 106 yards and rushed for a career-high 115 yards. A 29-yard sprint that set up Uril Parrish's 9-yard touchdown run with 5:59 remaining was his team's longest run this season.
The Warriors dominated most of the first half.
Tulsa came no closer than Hawaii's 20 in its first five drives but got its break when Oliver Fletcher intercepted Chang with 4:39 to go in the half.
On Hawaii's 40-yard line, the Golden Hurricane pulled off a sneak play it had used earlier in the game, with Kilian taking a pass from Monroe Nichols after a fake reverse.
The play gave Tulsa 14 yards, and seconds later, Kilian found Richard McQuillar wide open in the middle for a 22-yard touchdown pass to narrow Hawaii's lead to 16-10 at the half.
Tulsa scored again on a 49-yard field goal by Brad DeVault early in the third quarter and took the lead on Jermaine Landrum's 15-yard touchdown run with 11:06 to go.
Mike Bass' 27-yard dash helped set up Hawaii's first touchdown, a 1-yard run by West Keliikipi. Seven minutes later, Keliikipi capped an 80-yard Warrior drive with a 10-yard run for another touchdown.
A 25-yard field goal by Justin Ayat in the second quarter was Hawaii's last visit to the end zone.
