2003 regular season NCAA college football DVD
recap / box score

STARKVILLE, Miss. -- Matt Mauck passed for 171 yards and a touchdown in less than three quarters of work and No. 7 LSU converted three of Mississippi State's four turnovers into touchdowns in a 41-6 victory Saturday night.

LSU is 5-0 for the first time since 1973. The Tigers (2-0 Southeastern Conference) have won four straight and 11 of 12 against Mississippi State (0-4, 0-1).

Devery Henderson had seven catches for 114 yards and a touchdown and Shyrone Carey ran for two scores for the Tigers.

The Bulldogs have lost nine straight games, the third longest losing streak in team history and two short of the school record.

If Tigers fans were worried about an LSU letdown following its dramatic win last week against defending SEC champion Georgia, it wasn't for long.

LSU built a 24-0 halftime lead by dominating the hapless Bulldogs on both sides of the ball.

Carey had two 1-yard touchdown runs. The second was set up by Jack Hunt's 34-yard interception return to the 1 and made it 17-0 with 9:48 left in the second quarter.

Travis Daniels capped the first half by grabbing a tipped pass and running untouched for a 48-yard touchdown with 54 seconds left.

It was the Bulldogs' third turnover of the half and the eighth interception Kevin Fant has thrown this season.

The careless Bulldogs can't even get a call to go their way these days.

On the third play of the second half, officials ruled McKinley Scott fumbled after making a catch over the middle and LSU recovered at the Bulldogs 36. It was a close call, but television replays appeared to show Scott was down.

LSU went for the knockout on the next play and got it.

Mauck hit Henderson deep over the middle for a 36-yard TD that made it 31-0 with 13:48 left in the third quarter.

Mauck was replaced by Marcus Randall with over five minutes left in the third quarter. Mauck finished 12-for-19 against a defense that came in ranked last in the nation against the pass.

Few Bulldogs fans stuck around to see Mississippi State finally get on the scoreboard against LSU's stingy defense, top-ranked in the SEC.

Through three quarters the Bulldogs had 133 total yards.

They padded those stats in the fourth quarter and avoided the shutout when Fant connected with Justin Jenkins on a 16-yard TD with 10:12 left to make it 34-6. The Bulldogs, fittingly, misfired on the 2-point conversion.

Fant was 19-for-30 for 191 yards, while taking a beating from the LSU pass rush. Twice in the third quarter he was sacked on consecutive plays.

The Tigers have outscored the Bulldogs 83-6 in their last two trips to Scott Field.

Mississippi State has lost nine straight SEC games. Next week, the Bulldogs host Vanderbilt, which has a 19-game SEC losing streak.
