CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Brian Calhoun did it again for Wisconsin, rushing for 171 yards and two touchdowns in a gritty 14-5 victory over penalty-prone North Carolina on Saturday night.
The Badgers hardly put up the gaudy numbers they have become accustomed to this season, but it was enough to make them 3-0 for the third time in four seasons. Brian Calhoun carried the ball 38 times and continued his impressive start, giving him 471 yards so far in his first season after transferring from Colorado.
Few of his runs were pretty, yet they were effective enough to hand the Tar Heels (0-2) another close loss. Brian Calhoun's best efforts came on consecutive plays midway through the fourth quarter, a 26-yard run to move the Badgers down to the North Carolina 32, and a 14-yarder to get it even closer.
Three plays later, he scampered in from the 4 for his final TD to make it 14-3 and put the game out of reach. The Tar Heels tried to rally, driving to 4-yard line in the final 2 minutes before Matt Bakers' pass on fourth down fell incomplete.
Wisconsin punter Ken DeBauche then stepped out of the end zone on the final play to account for the final score.
Baker finished 16-for-37 for 281 yards and an interception, but North Carolina totaled only 57 yards on the ground a week after gaining 61 in a 27-21 loss Georgia Tech. Barrington Edwards led the way in this one with 37 yards.
Penalties were perhaps a bigger problem. The Tar Heels finished with 12 infractions for 115 yards, including two when Wisconsin punted on its first possession. A block in the back and an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the sidelines -- presumably on coach John Bunting -- pinned North Carolina on its own 5, helping give the Badgers the edge in field position.
Later, when Connor Barth kicked a 52-yard field goal that would have cut the deficit to 7-3 early in the second quarter, a delay of game penalty nullified the kick and forced a punt. And a flag for offensive pass interference late in the first half took away a 24-yard gain and stopped a drive.
The Badgers came in averaging 61.5 points and nearly 500 yards of total offense, but nothing came that easy against the surprisingly stingy Tar Heels. The 14 points were the fewest allowed in a loss since 1998, and they outgained the Badgers 338-304.
