AUSTIN, Texas -- Colt McCoy already had a really cool name for a Texas quarterback. Now he's written it into the Longhorn record book.
Next, he probably needs a nickname. "Six Shooter" maybe?
Colt McCoy threw for a school-record six touchdown passes Saturday night and No. 6 Texas recovered from an early 10-point deficit to roll to a 63-31 victory over Baylor, seizing sole possession of first place in the Big 12 South.
With a 50-yard fourth-quarter strike to Limas Sweed, the redshirt freshman from West Texas put his name above James Brown and Chris Simms who shared the school single-game record of five.
And yet when it was over, all Colt McCoy wanted to talk about was his slow start: His lone interception -- "dumb" -- and a scoring throw that probably should have been picked off if not for a great catch by tight end Jermichael Finley.
"I shouldn't have thrown that," Colt McCoy said. "Their secondary did a good job."
Really?
Colt McCoy passed for a career-high 275 yards. Of his 21 completions, nearly a third were for touchdowns. Limas Sweed and Billy Pittman each scored twice.
"I didn't realize (the record) in the game," said Colt McCoy, who has 18 TD passes this season. "There were great plays, great touchdowns. But early on, things weren't working and it was because of me."
Texas (6-1, 3-0) was shut out in the first quarter. But five Baylor turnovers and two defensive touchdowns pushed the Longhorns past the 60-point mark against the Bears for the second year in a row.
Shawn Bell passed for 303 yards and two touchdowns and even caught one on a trick play in the third quarter for Baylor (3-4, 2-1).
The upstart Bears came in tied with Texas for first place in the division and cornerback C.J. Wilson predicted an "I-35 Surprise" that would shake up the league.
And for 15 minutes, Texas looked stuck in a post-Oklahoma hangover and anything seemed possible.
The Bears hit a 67-yard touchdown pass on their first play. The defense stuffed the Longhorns on the first three series and the Bears looked primed for the upset until Colt McCoy started firing TDs.
Bell stunned the home crowd when he faked a handoff, paused, then launched a perfect strike to Trent Shelton on Baylor's first play. Bell followed the play with both hands pointing upside down hook'em horns signs.
When Ryan Havens kicked a 27-yard field goal, Baylor, which had been shut out by Texas three of the last four years, led 10-0.
"We always talk about not eating the poison cheese, we nibbled some," Texas coach Mack Brown said of the dangers of a letdown after beating Oklahoma a week earlier.
"We didn't throw up but we got a little dizzy," he said.
Everything changed with a sack and a fumble.
Tim Crowder sacked Bell, the ball popped out and Texas recovered on the Baylor 29. Three plays later, Colt McCoy and Pittman connected for Texas' first score.
The Longhorns forced three turnovers in the second quarter, turning them all into touchdowns. For his part, Colt McCoy kept putting it up and his receivers kept finding the end zone. Three of his TD passes covered 24 yards or more.
Jermichael Finley made it 14-10 when Colt McCoy scrambled to his left, waited at the sideline, then threw into coverage. Jermichael Finley bailed him out when he plucked the ball out of Wilson's hands for the touchdown.
Wilson, so bold with his prediction earlier in the week, also got burned on Limas Sweed's long TD in the fourth.
Matt Melton returned an interception 34 yards and Texas led 28-10 at halftime.
"We made Pop Warner mistakes," Shelton said. "We cut out those fumbles and interceptions and it's a whole different ballgame."
After Bell cut the Texas lead to 28-17 with his TD catch, Colt McCoy went right back to work. His fourth scoring pass covered 19 yards to Limas Sweed and the rout was on.
After the game, Wilson wasn't inclined to give Colt McCoy much credit.
"We beat ourselves more than he beat us," Wilson said. "If I was a betting man, and I am not, I would bet anything that our defense would beat their offense any day of the week."
Texas players declined to comment on Wilson's bold pregame prediction of an upset. The scoreboard likely said all they would have wanted to anyway.
"We're not proud we got behind," Brown said. "But we're proud we answered."
